The best place to start is by figuring out what your top priorities are for your big day. For us, two things come to mind as our top priorities: we wanted to be sure the people we wanted were there (so: no cap on number of invites – and yes, this did affect which venues we could book) and the photography (does that shock you? I didn’t think so). Of course we had a price point in mind for our total spending – and for each individual category on the list, but there was some flexibility in all of that. In fact, when all was said and done we spent almost 50% more on our wedding photography than we had originally planned. Why? Because we knew who we wanted as our photographer and we were willing to sacrifice in other spending areas to get her! And six years later we still agree that this was the best decision!
Something else to be aware of as you’re planning – try to plan what YOU want, not what other people might want. One of the things that I always “knew” about my wedding day was that I wanted to have cookies instead of cake. I don’t really care for cake and I love cookies. Plus, with cookies people can choose what flavor they prefer since there’s a lot variety. However, at the request of someone else who at the time sounded like they felt very strongly about this decision (we found out after the wedding that they didn’t really care), we went with a cake instead. Do you know my biggest regret from our wedding day? Yup, that’s right – we didn’t have cookies. Does it really matter? Does it affect our marriage? No, not really; but it does make me a little bit sad even still. Thankfully I get over it pretty quickly by whipping up my own batch of cookies (haha)! 🙂
